In the beginning, Alaska's First Urban was more ambitious than most magazines. It wanted to be the magazine that gave readers relevant information about where they could go with their lives. Leaders at The 49th Degree saw this potential as an opportunity to push the envelope in a new direction — one where writing was as important as pictures, and where the brand was bold, brash, and irreverent. But just because someone tries something new doesn't mean it will work. Many of us have poured time, money, and effort into projects that didn't turn out the way we expected. So when The 49th Degree tried something different — something different from what anyone else was doing — many people believed it would fail.
The 49th Degree is dedicated to documenting the imagination of ordinary people, the beauty of insanity, the exhilaration of discovery, and the danger of falling into fantasy. These are the writings of those with minds like ours. The acts of courage, imagination, and creativity we witness everyday are worthy to be told. The 49th Degree is for only those who dare to look at the world through different eyes."""" error creative direction seems like it's related to creativity... why else would it be in the 49th degree?
It's no secret that Alaska is one of the most creative places in the United States. Some might even say it's the most creative States in America. That said, perhaps the most overlooked aspect of the vibrant creative scene is the fact that thousands upon thousands of people seek out opportunities to create in the rarefied air of the north. It's a very peculiar phenomenon that has only been observed here, and only within the last two years.
So here's to 10 issues and the hope for 10 more thank you Alaska!
